Smoke-free Policy and
Procedure
Purpose:
Monroe
County Medical Center is an
established healthcare
leader in the community and
has a responsibility not
only in the treatment of
patients but in the
promotion of health.
Monroe
County Medical Center
recognizes the health risks
associated with active and
passive smoke, and has a
responsibility to its
patients, visitors,
employees, and medical staff
to provide a safe
environment for the practice
of healthcare.
Monroe
County Medical Center is
sensitive to the needs of
all individuals, smokers and
nonsmokers. Our focus is
smoke, not smokers.
Policy:
Smoking
by medical staff, employees,
volunteers, and visitors is
not permitted within the
interior spaces of the
hospital or hospital
buildings.
Procedure:
1. A
patient is not permitted to
smoke within the interior
space of the hospital unless
the patient meets all three
of the following criteria:
a.
Patient has been given only
six months to live or is a
quadriplegic or substance
abuser.
b.
Patient is placed in a
private room.
c.
Patient has a written order
for tobacco use from the
physician.
2. For
the smoker's convenience,
there is a designated
smoking area outside the
building--the smoking deck
can be accessed through the
waiting room on the nursing
floor.
